Abstract

This research consisted of comparing musical preferences between men and women. To achieve this, a quasi-experimental research was conducted with a sample of 481 subjects (43.5% male and 56.5% female) between 18 and 23 years old. Musical preferences and degrees of femininity and masculinity were measured through two items in an online format. For musical preferences, 12 songs belonging to the musical styles "romantic ballad", "blues", "heavy metal", "jazz", "pop" and "rap" were used as stimuli, measured on a Likert scale. For the degrees of femininity and masculinity, the IMAFE Inventory was used. The main result shows that there are significant differences in musical preferences according to gender; men prefer blues and heavy metal, while women prefer romantic ballads and pop. However, it was found that there is a positive correlation between femininity and some musical styles, but not with masculinity, where no correlation was found.
