Abstract

This article aims to examine the relevance of clothing, as a means of differentiation and segmentation within the rural, mining and indigenous society of San Pedro de Atacama during the twentieth century. Such a situation is specifically analyzed from a categorization made through clothing, fabrics, testimonies, fashion and other elements that reflect the social position of each individual and their affiliation to specific common or ethnic groups. To carry out this study, we employed an ethnographic approach of participant observation, conversations, interviews, including the review and family photographs, in order to analyze the discourse and meaning around clothing during all this time and its impact on the collective order of this community.
