Abstract

In this unpublished study, the famous Chilean historian Ricardo Donoso (1896-1985) offers a global vision of the interests of the great Venezuelan humanist Andrés Bello (1781-1865), in Caracas, London, and Santiago, by placing in historical and cultural context many of the works in Bello’s vast personal library. Donoso traces the personal and intellectual connections between Bello and the authors of many important books which formed part of his collection, among them the Spanish émigrés in London, Pedro de Angelis, George Ticknor, and the “first generation” of Chilean historians. Donoso’s study illuminates important aspects of Bello’s intellectual breadth and scope, the historiography of Hispanic America, and the development of Chilean culture.
